least some apprehensions and will

you will find that you have had one of
the most rewarding and most happy

take a more serious line by remind-
ing you that not only are you embark-
ing on a great adventure, you are
also seeking qualifications which will
mark you as a person of ability and
knowledge. Learning is[...]ns im-
pose responsibility and service.

Although you will derive enjoyment
and satisfaction from studying with
fellow students the venture into
scholarship and learning is essen-
tially a personal one. It is important
that you realise at the outset that
your studies, your career and your
life are in your own hands. If your do
not want to learn you will find that
your decision will be respected and
that someone else will take your

place in 1989. lf you are here to work
you will receive every encourage-
ment and we will all rejoice with you
when the great day of your gradu-
ationcomes. Inshort, set your goals
early and stick withthem. You willbe
tempted to treat such obvious advice
with some scorn. Please don’t - the
only road to success is through en-
deavour and a[...]go on to add, however, that
Universities are also places of fun.
They are places to broaden hori-
zons, to learn from others, to acquire
tolerance. They are places to talk
and to listen. Above all they are
places to strengthen your ability to

integrity, committed to serving New
Zealand, which should be the mark
of every graduate.

Frank McLaughlin is the Presi-
dent onthe Students’ Association

Social Work degree and was in-
volved in the organisation of the
anti ‘user-pays’ in education
campaign at Massey last year. His
Message to the masses:

Those of you arriving here forthe first
time - welcome to Massey Univer-
sity! As for the city of Palmerston
North - well the nicest thing | can say
about it - is that it’s half-way to a lot of
nice places! By the time you read
this column orientation will be in full
swing and the city resuscitated after
it's summer sedation. Lan[...]ur while delighting in
student spending.

Whether you have much to spend
will of course depend on whether
you've had summer employment or
not. Contrary to the Government's
opinion we believe that most stu-
de[...]ny parental
resources to draw off. Indeed some
of you over summer may have been
asked to fill in a survey that the Stu-
dent Association undertook to try
and assess student income and
expenditure. The pace of social
change (reconstruction or destruc-[...]e) in this
country has become alarmingly fast
and the Student Association both
locally and nationally h[...]on to merely a profit making indus-
try.

However the Student Association is
not all political to distract you from
the harsh realities of tertiary life, the
Student Association provides as
many social event[...]this year looks promising
and diverse, I’m sure you'll find
something in the extensive pro-
gramme that will enhance your intro-
duction fortnight to University life.

For those of you confused as to what
you’re actually doing here remember
some of the following;

Students and the University

The University is run by aplethora
of committees. One of the roles of
the Student Execuitve is to repre-
sent student interests on these
committees. This is especially vital
at the present time when many
changes are imminent on the Uni-
versity system, mostly designed to
make students pay more.

The ruling body body of the Univer-
sity is Massey University Council,
which has to ratify the decisions of
most of the other committees that
exist on campus. The council sup-
posed to be responsible for just
about everything at the University
from the number of sheep on the
Massey farms to the price of
hostels.One three hour Council
meeting c[...]reams of
reports and recommendations.
Members of the Council include the
Vice Chancellor, the Mayor of Palm-
erston North, Professors, represen-
tatives of University Graduates and
the Academic staff. Along with these
distinguished people are two student
representatives. The President,
Frank is one and the other is Peter
Shepherd, an experienced veteran
of student life and the University
(he’s been here longer than the Vice
Chancellor).

Students have also gained repr[...]re:

Student

Committee.
Primarily concerned with the man-
agement of the Student Counseling

Welfare Advisory

and Medical[...]discussed.

Student Centre and Hostels
Committee

The feeding and housing of the 1000
hostel residents as well as the Stu-
dent Centre and all the facilities it
houses is the responsibility of this
committee. Price increases for the
hostel students are the most contro-
versial issue the three students on
this committee deal with.

Spor[...]ittee

All students contribute a $15 levy
towards the operating cost of the
Recreation and Sports Centre. The
members of the executive that are on
this committee are there to ensure

that the Rec Centre provides for
students needs. This year will see
the centre with new staff and new
recreation programmes.

Disciplinary Committee

Once you enrol, you are subject to
the University disciplinary proce-
dures. This means you can be fined
up to $100 and have other discipli-[...]n against for breach-
ing university regulations. The most
serious punishment is to be expelled
from the University. Most of the time
this committee is dealing with unpaid
traffi[...]duct appears. Last year students
appeared before the committee for
forgery, planting a hoax bomb and
theft of a hostel washing machine.

If you are unfortunate to have to
appear before one of these commit-
tees, see a member of the Student
Executive who will be able to help
you with your case.

And that board of Directors. The
Executive. Elected annually at elec-
tions in July. The 6000 members of
the Association have to cough up a
membership fee of up to $100 annu-
ally for the privilege of what? Letting
the Executive spend it all.

So how does the Executive function
as it carves up all this cash? The 10
or so Executive members meet
weekly to make decisions on theThe meetings are chaired by
the President, Frank, and the stu-
dent newspaper reporter is usually
theirto i[...]of any shady
deals i.e. fact finding missions by the
whole of the Executive to the Baha-
mas.

But not all the work of the Executive
is done at these weekly meetings.
The Association being such a large
operation, while the rest of the Ex-
ecutive are off at lectures decisions
must be made, press statements
issued and meetings with the Uni-
versity and other organisations held.
The President’s duties in the run-
ning of the organisation are a full
time job. Frank has the President's
Office this year and gets a $10,000
s[...]Presi-
dents to decide on tactics for avoid-
ing the introduction of $10,000 Uni-
versity tuition fees per student.

Although President is the best job
title on the executive, all the other
executive members have the title of
Vice President in charge of a particu-
lar area of work.

The Treasurer Marco, Creemers,is
an experienced stude[...]reasurer. Other than
stopping people spending all the
cash he is also involved in the new
student centre project and the con-
tinuing development of the associa-
tion properties.

The Secretary, Tony Woods, may
be a destabilising influence in the
Exec after a spending the summer
holidays in the America training at a

secret CIA base. He spent the last
term of 1987 as Secretary for the
Executive and its his job to make
sure that the administrative side of
the Executive and their meeting
function.

Authur McKechnie and other asso-
ciates will be taking control of the
Maori Students Common Room in
their role as Maori Vice Presidents.
Arthur is a survivor on the Exec from
1987.

Lloyd Pinder is the president in
charge of Vice and General items.
He was elected to the General Vice
@ president’s position after serving as
the inaugural Campaigns Vice Presi-
dentin 1987 and becoming an expert
in using the MUSA photocopier and |j
computers to produce reams of post-
ers. General Vice President’s in the
past have worked on accommocla-
tion, the student centre and national
issues.

Fi Geary and Steve Couper are
sharing the responsibilities of Cam-
paigns vice-president th[...]will be in charge of informing
and brain-washing the student
masses on a variety of issues that
the Executive thinks necessary.

Dennis Paxie is the Sports Vice
President. Last year he wrote[...]

Jacqui Buckley and Janine
Kilminster are the Education and
Welfare VP’s for 1988. Student
Accommodation problems and the
possibility of the introduction of ‘user
pays’ into the University should
manage to occupy the Ed and Wel-
fare VPs for most of 1988.

In the Women’s rights department,
Mary Lojkine and Jane Ireland will
be the joint Women’s Vice Presi-
dent. Not a portfolio[...]f needlework and cooking
on campus but more along the lines
ofwomen’s issues suchas the role of
Women in education, and address-
ing the male-centred problems of
rape and sexual harassment.

The Governmentis looking seriously
at imposing full c[...]ces, Arts Fes-
tivals and other social events are the
responsibility of Paul Dunphy, the
Cultural Vice President. If is fortu-
nate Paul e[...]may have to go to a lot of
parties and dances. At the endof last
year he had the distinction of being
one of Santas elves at the MUSA
Xmas shout at the Fitz.

And for a bit of real excitement there
is the Annual General Meeting of the
Association where the annual ac-
counts are presented. These are
supposed to be held in the first term,
if the accounts have managed to get

through the auditor. Always interest-
ing to look at the expenditure figures
for such items as travel and staff
parties.

For news of what the executive are
doing or not doing, watch the student
newspaper, CHAFF. If you are com-
pletely dissatisfied with the Execu-
tive and the way they spend your
money you may be able to find them
in the Students’ Association offices
to harass them. When you can't
stand any more of a particular stu-
dent executive member's incompe-
tence you can call a Special General
Meeting of the Association and
move a ‘vote of no confidence’ to
possibly force the resignation of this
person.

A mesage from the General
Vice President, Lloyd Pin-
der

Hello Everybody.

Being a first year student at Massey
you'd be a little disorientated about
the place. First of all, why are you
here? If you’ve come to University to
study hard to work for[...]gree and are preparing to put your
head down from the start, think
again. Facing you are the best years
of your life - don’t waste them with
your head stuck inside books the
whole year. Instead get out and
attend the events, activities, dances,
balls etc that are being put on. Join
clubs that interest you. Go to the
pub, meet people - there is a lot more
to be lear[...]ersity than
what can be found in your textbooks.

The students who ‘fail’ University
aren't necessa[...]s honours degree in nuclear
physics is useless if you can’t relate
to people and know how to relax.

The big difference between school
and University is t[...]are no ‘teachers’ as such. No-
one will tell you to attend ‘class’
(lectures), nor will anyone watch
over your performance. In fact, it will
be rare if the lecturers, even know
your name - first year BBS o[...]f stu-
dents attending different lecture
streams. You are one face in the
multitudes. It is up to your own self-
discipline to get down and do the
work. Laboratory attendance tends
to be compulsory, at the expense of
being thrown out of the paper if you
don't go.

Upon graduation you will probably
be seeking ajob and competingwith

others for the position. Your em-
ployer will not look at your marks - a
BBS gained with 21 ‘A’s’ is exactly
the same as a BBS degree with 21
‘C’s’. Instead the employer will be
more concerned with the develop-
ment of your overall personality and
skills.

Before you lies the opportunity of
your lifetime - ‘User Pays’ ha[...]duced, meaning your
education isn't going to cost you a
fortune; you are accompanied by
7,000 internal and 14,000
extramural students on this journey
into the unknown that 1988 will bring.

performances and anything else that
interests you. And fit in enough
study to pass.

Accommodation Service

Upstairs in the Student Centre in the MUSA Office. A
place to find a flat, flatmates an[...]n Ac-
commodation matters.

Banks :

On Campus at the Commercial Centre behind Ben-
netts Bookshop are branches of the following banks :

Bars

Social Hall - Behind the Sports Centre, has bar
facilities which are open during Orientation, the Winter
Sports Clubs and other social activities.

Kiwitea Lounge and the Coffee Bar also have bars
which are used during social events.

Boardroom

Upstairs in the Student Centre. The scene of the
weekly Executive meetings to administer the
Association’s operations.

Bookshop

Bennetts University Bookshop in the Commercial
Complex at the entrance of campus.

Also the second handbook stall operates in the Sports
Centre during the first weeks of the Autumn term.

Club Notice Boards

Information on the various Sports and Cultural Clubs
at Massey can be found on their notice boards along
the Students’ Association Corridor, upstairs in the
Student Centre.

Capping

The last week of Term One. A time for graduates to
return to get their degrees at the Capping Ceremonies
as well as have a wild time with undergraduates at the
week’s social events.

Coffee Bar

In the Student Centre at the Top of the stairs. Open
most of the day and also at night for those on campus
and in the Library.

Counseling Service

Opposite Columbo Ha[...]ourses),
Study and Exam taking workshops.

CHAFF

The Students’ Association Newspaper. Distributed
free on campus most Wednesdays. Letters to the
Editor and other contributions can be dropped at the
paper's office in the Students’ Association Corridor,
Upstairs in the Student Centre.

By the Boiler house on the hill above campus. It has
places for over 40 children and is open throughout the
University year.

Dining Room

Provides breakfast[...]ents. Lunchtime meals are also provided featuring
the famed Kiwi Roll.

Fees and Bursaries

In the ground floor of the Registry is where you pay up
your fees and fines or collect your Bursar[...]rovides replacement ID cards.

Hardship Loans

If you have drained the banks for all they have, Try
the Fees and Bursary section of the Registry for a
Bursary Advance or the MUSA office for a small loan.

Hostels Office

Next to the Student Centre is the offices of the Hostel
Management who can tell you how long the waiting
list is for the hostels.

ID Cards

Your Student ID card is issued at the beginning of
your term at varsity at Fees and Bursaries. Good for
students discounts and taking out the occasional
Library book.

Lost and Found Property
See the Mailroom in the basement of the Registry or
the Students’ Association Office.

Mail
For students on Campus see the Student Centre
Foyer for mail boxes.

Maori Students’ Common Room
Off the Kiwitea Common Room above the dining room
in the Student Centre.

The Students’ Association Office upstairs in the

At the time of writing Massey has a Post Office inthe

1st floor of the Registry but it is supposed to be van- /

other recreational facilities. The trained staff offer

Student Shop

The Student Shop on campus is open from 8 am to 6
pm during the week and from 10 am to 2 pm during
the weekend. The place to buy sustenance in the form
of pies, drinks, Moro bars and other snack f[...]s a wide range of
Massey Souvenirs.

Social Hall

The scene of many Orientation events. A large
capacity hall and bar area. Located behind the Sport
and Rec Centre.

Student Health
Upstairs in the Refectory Building. Appointments can
be made by telephone to see the Doctors and Nurse.

Student Job Search

This student employment agency finds vacation and
part-time work. You can register as available for work
at their office in Princess St, opposite the Newmans
Bus Depot, at the Polytech campus. You can also give
them a ring at 82-828.

Telephones

When you need to ring your flat to tell you won't be
home to cook dinner, telephones are available in the
Student Centre and Library Foyer for your use.

Tournaments

The University Sports Tournaments to be held this
yea[...]t Lincoln College,
Winter Tournament at Massey in the August Holidays
and the Ski Tournament at Mt Ruapehu. Watch

Travel Agency

Massey Travel is in the Commercial Complex, oppo-

As the new term of 1988 begins
chances are that when the inevitable
queues for |.D. photographs form
there will be afew faces that do notfit
any of the stereotype images of the
young first year student. These
faces in the queue, might look dis-
turbingly like some one’s mother or
worse still for the young student's
sense of well-being a father, de-[...]g for any young person
hoping to mature away from the love
and guidance of over-protective
parents to s[...]nothing to fear
from any of us, but also to give the
assurance that we are here to stay.
Our presence[...]inhibit
student rites of passage and we may
shock you sometimes by our own
personal outrageousness. Som[...]we are
different and we can not always
blend into the background of student
life. Sometimes our reasons for at-
tending Massey differ from the so-
called average student. Many adult
students “do” papers for the interest
it provides, many others want to
advance their career options or im-

away all the well-meaning old hip-

Children on Campus

Massey
Child Care Centre

The Creche is situated at the top of
Bourke Road overlooking the Uni-
versity and opposite the Boiler
House. Itis establishedwithin a con-
verted farmhouse, with a large out-
side enclosed play space.

The Centre holds and “A” Grade
Licence and it ent[...]ammes for school age children
are also available. The Creche is
open from the middle of January
throughout the year until just before
Christmas. Hours of opening are
8.00 a.m. to 5.15 p.m.

The Creche is staffed by a Supervi-
sor and five/six Assistants. The
overall aim of the staff is to work to
provide a flexible and high quality
childcare service. For the children
an atmosphere of security and
understand[...]age group, to encour-
age learning through play.

The Massey Child Care Centre be-
gan operation about 16 years ago,
and is administered by the Massey
University Students’ Association
with financial assistance from the
University on behalf of its members,
and in the interests of the wider
Massey community.

Broad policy decisions a[...]e which usu-
ally includes 2 Representatives from
the Massey University Students As-

sociation, 2. Representatives from
the University and 4 Parent Users.
The Management Committee aims
to provide support for the staff while
leaving day-to-day control with the
Supervisor, work-days, family main-
tenance are activities which the
Users’ Group are developing.

The Centre is run broadly ona User-
pay principle, with only limited finan-
cial assistance provided by MUSA
and the University, and occasional
equipment grants from the Univer-
sity or from service clubs etc.

your music box. However, if it’s

Radio Massey with Radio Days for
the Campus groovers.

Radio Massey’s life began 8 y[...]oil, chaos,
destitution and calamity. Survival in
the radio game is only for the fittest
and 1988 promises to have the
music blaring across the air louder
and longer than ever before.

As a progressive rock radio station it
serves the purpose of catering for
student music. Radio Mass[...]irplay. In fact

tion, however, the reality is long
hours, boring tasks, endless cups of

To make this exclting television set, you will
need a small cardboard box about 8° by 6” or the

Digest, has more pictures than Na-
tional Geographic and better recipes
than the Australian Women’s
Weekly. Na, not really, but[...]o students at Massey. In
theory it should provide you with in-
formation about what is going on,

Student owned or controlled
housing is what the Accommoda-
tion Service is all about. With the
Students' Association actively
involved we can become a force
in the accommodation market
creating quality, reasonably
priced accommodation for stu-
dents.

Over the years the Students’ Asso-
ciation has bought residential prop-
erty whichit has rented to students at
below the common market price.
The money for these purchases
comes fromthe building levy compo-
nent of the Student Association fee.
Currently MUSA owns over[...]development of these
properties is continuing all the time.
Recently we have been purchasing
‘houses[...]and placing

them on sections we own, increasing
the density of housing on the site.
This style of development has taken
place i[...]rris Streets adding a large num-
ber of houses to the student con-
trolled stock.

As wellas the MUSA owned housing
stock the service also leases rental
property off other landlords. These
properties are then rented to stu-
dents by the Accommodation Serv-
ice. This is attractive forthe landlords
as they have a guarantied rent from
the Students’ Association and do not
have to concern themselves with the
vagaries of students tenants. There
are currently[...]vacancies occur so leave your
contact address on the list at the
Accommodation Office. At the Office

you will also find lists of places avail-
able in flats, private board available
and students wanting places in flats.

commodation for the first time a
few pointers to assist in the
smooth operation of the service.
Points to note are:

1) Upon your returnto campus check
to ensure that you are signed in on
your tenancy agreement.
your flatmates are signed in with you
because the agreement is a collec-
tive responsibility.

2) C[...]person
pays rent alone it will be credited
across the rent payable on the whole
house or flat and will not be credited
to the rent of the individual who actu-
ally pays that portion of the rent.

3) Advise of maintenance work as
required. Please advise whether the
job is urgent-urgent, or just urgent or
can it wa[...]e Officer has an
enormous work load ahead of him.
The demands on him at times are
very considerable ind[...]consid-
erately. Give our lawnmowing con-
tractor the opportunity to enter onto
the property and mow lawns without
hindrance of vehic[...]akages
and cost incurred by any flat or
house are the responsibility of the
tenants occupying that particular
property. If your friends visit and
cause damage you as tenants are
responsible for the costs.

6) If you shift from one flat/house
sign yourself out of the previous ten-
ancy. If you do not you will remain
liable forthe costs incurred by others
who take up your place in the prop-
erty. If you take up a new tenancy be
sure to sign it at the MUSA Office.

The three annual sports tourna-

athlon and Largebore Shooting.

The BNZ Winter Tournament will be
held at Massey University in the
August vacation. The Winter sports
of Badminton, Hockey, Basketball,

Soccer.

In addition to the BNZ Easter and
Winter Tournaments, NZUSU also
co-ordinates and funds the annual
University Ski Tournament. This

The opportunity to gain national uni-

Sports Officer if you wish to obtain

Universiade :
(World Student Games)

The highlight of many students
sporting careers is to represent New
Zealand at the World Student
Games.

The NZUSU is also responsible for
the co-ordination and selection of
NZU teams to participate in the Bi-
annual Universiade. Billed on the
International Calendar’ as second
only to the Olympic Games, these
are co-ordinated by the International
Universities Sports Federation
whic[...]events.

In1987NZUSU sent a smallteam of
five to the Summer World Student

We can provide you with a large

courts. You could come and play
any of these or do your own thing.

The sauna is up and running.

A new game requiring skill, c[...]GOLF

This club has not seen a lot of activity
in the last few years, although many
students can be seen around the
various golf courses in the Mana-
watu participating in the ol’ Scottish
game. There will be lessons run this
year at the Rec Centre, so what’s
needed isplenty of keen people to
help the club along.

HOCKEY - Men’s & Women’s
Both the men’s and women’s clubs
are strong both in lo[...]ofteams caterforboth social
and serious players. The top teams
of the hockey clubs repeatedly con-
stitute a large prop[...]Kai and Tai
Kwon Do clubs are all operating from
the Rec Centre for those of you on
fitness and self-defence type activi-

RUGBY: MENS

The largest club on campus, cater-
ing for all levels[...]87 was a highly success-
ful year with them being the top club
inthe Manawatu and they look set for

You will find the Students’ Health
Service on the first floor of the old
Refectory building. The entrance is
through the side door opposite Pink
Hostel.

diploma students may use the serv-
ice provided that they have paid the
appropriate fee on enrolment.
Those who have not[...]tudents and staff
members are not eligible to use the
Service.

Office Hours And Appointments

more notice you can give us , the
more likely we are to be able to offer

Oram visits to provide a physiother-
apy service in the mornings. Heis a
private physiotherapist not em-
ployed by the University and in gen-
eral youneedto be referredto him by
a doctor before receiving treatment.

The Service Provided

We provide care during episodes[...]nisations,
overseas travel, hearing tests etc.
As the staff has a wide experience of
dealing with student health and ill-
ness , they are particularly aware of
the ways that illness can affect study
and of the anxieties that can arise
when sickness occurs at the time of
exams.

Mrs Walsh is available to help wi[...]nd injuries. Ask for
an appointment with her when you
have something minor like a cold or
asore throat, as the doctors canthen
spend more time with people who
h[...]oblems. She
will of course ask a doctor to review
you when appropriate. Naturally not
all illnesses need specific treatment
and indeed much of the time there is

The Reserve Book Room, in the

I take this opportunity to welcome you, either on your
return or as you join student life at Massey University,
and | trust that you will grasp every opportunity of-
fered by the University to advance your knowledge
and education for successful careers in your chosen
fields.

My responsibilities to the University and Students are
threefold. Firstly, it is my task to ensure the provision
of Catering Services for students and staff on Cam-
pus. To do this the Student Centre houses the main
Dining Hall and Coffee Bar, and all meals are served
from that central location. Throughout the Terms, our

EXPLORING THE MANAWATU
The most dramatic entry to Palmer-
stonis from Hawkes Bay through the
Manawatu Gorge. The narrow wind-
ing road just loves testing student
cars and their radiators. Ashhurst
lies between the Gorge and Palmer-
ston and from here you can detour to
Pohangina and Totara Reserve,
areas of virgin native bush - good for
picnics and paddling in the Pohang-
ina River.

Less than 30 minutes drive south of
Palmerston on Highway 57 is the
Tokomaru Steam Museum. Picnic
and swim at Horse shoe bend. High-
way 56 also heads west to the surf-
ing and sunbathing spots of the re-
gion, Himitangi and Foxton... These

view can be had of all the rich Mana-
watu Pastures (Mushroom Spotting

reason you will be at this port of call
is when you are trying to hitch out of
it. Take consolation though in one of
the villages numerous Take-aways.
Just north of Bulls[...]and Heaton Park (full of fine
old elms and oaks). You can drive
quickly through Turakina unless
waylaid by the two Hotels and
Greasy shop. However save time for
the temple at Ratana.

Another more direct way to shake
the cobwebs from your system is
SEX. Not only good fun and benefi-
cial to the cardio-vascular system, it
is also free, in theory at least. No
room to rave about the ethics of
using this activity as a entertainment
method however religion aside it is
still the most compelling reason not

where they are less likely to have

the Women’s Group or Irish Society.

In town you will find Centrepoint

main museum is based around the

however in general unless you are

Time To Get Square...

Square Edge is the
Manawatu. Community Arts
Centre, situated sin the
former Municipal Council
Chamber on the "Edge of
the Square”.

The building has a rich history.
Back in 1883 the site was occupied
_ by the Colonial Bank; in 1900 the
Council got the building and used
it as the Public library, then in 1905
it became the Council offices. In
1944 the lot was demolished and
the present building was born. In
1980 they moved out and in 1981
the Palmerston North Community
Arts Council obtained a lease on

the place. This laid the foundations |
for the establishment of the .
Manawatu Community Arts Centre, |

new Bars are called Scholars and
Jesters.

put on concerts every now and

Tribune have good community

Poets and Dramatists pass through
as well. The Art Gallery has some
good music, usually on a Sunday.
It pays to look around in
Palmerston. You can be quite
pleasantly surprised at what you
can find.

unprotected intercourse for it to be

not have a supportive partner or

WELCOME-

No doubt Mum and Dad have just
driven off into the sunset with the
family Holden and you are feeling a
trifle bewildered by it all. Your mind
is boggled by the thought of
enrolling, timetables, books,
workload and study. You wonder
what your neighbours will be like,
will you make any friends and do
you admit to anyone that you don't
know what Orientation is and
who the hell ‘Three Leaning Men’
are!

Don't panic. Everyone else is in the
same boat (cell) and if you follow
this guide for first years | guarantee
1988 will be an experience you
won't forget.

Remember, you are preparing
yourself for the next 50 years of
life. Lay the grounds well, but don't
take it seriously. Eat he[...]than
academic work although achieving
abalance is the ultimate aim.

Your first priorities are
enrolment.It's essential that you
take the right things like (a) a
deckchair, (b) a good book (c) a
bottle of Mescal and (qd)
endurance... You'll need it.
Enrolment means getting course
approval ie. the computer spews
out a load of paper, hiccups, then
prints out a few dotted lines for
you to sign along. The next matter

photographer will attempt to take a
photograph where the
ressemblance is so great not even
you will recognize yourself.
However as long as you have a
number on the back don't panic, as
that is all that matters. Pay your
Hostel Bill with the first cheque you
have ever written and then queue
up for your first Massey Meal.
Completion of this means initiation
is over- you are now a fully fledged
Massey Mutant!

You won't remember anyone in the
first few days... just millions of faces

you probably won't be mingling in
the same social circles!

Being popular does not mean a
rapid shopping spree in order to fill
the bookshelves with the right
books, the tape deck with the right
music and the wardrobe with the
right threads. Rather just try and
achieve a happ[...]t get rid of that ‘Osti
number your Mother gave you for
Christmas.

Enjoying Hostel life takes assert[...]riority, go
exploring and try to locate all those
places that will be important to you,
kitchen, laundry, common room,
student centre and cafeteria. Also
look for the shopping complex with
Max, Massey's Music Man; based in
Bennetts. The .Post (before it
closes down) Office, Gymnasium,
Orchard and Social Hall. Wander
around the grounds at Whareata,
the bush behind the Computer
Centre -keeping an eye open for
places to hibernate in. Use the
services offered to you, in
narticular the Sports Centre. You
should seriously consider signing
up with one of the many Clubs and
Societies that lie in abundance just
waiting for new members. Also go
on one of the Library tours early in
the year, find out where the books
related to your course live and
utilise them. Doing so can save you

money and earn you brownie
points with your marker.

Study is part of the deal. Some
people do forget and think that
they are at Club Meds poor relation
for the year. Unfortunatly the
Government does not believe in
subsidising holida[...]halting all pocket
money payments.

| can't tell you exactly the secret to
my academic success. Four years
have seen three degree changes,
2 papers and thethe end
of year exams or did not get terms.
Probably the biggest life
threatening problem to Hostel
students is their diet. Based on a
meal ticket system you are entitled
to 14 ‘treats’ a week. You get the
option of either vegetarian or meat
but unfortunatly you can't swap
during the term unless you have a

MEAL HOURS

Weekdays

mouth watering treats that you
won't get from the Dining Hall.

Meal tickets are non-transferable
so you can't skip a few meals for
‘credit’ But you are entitled to a
refund if you lose or forget your
meal ticket and are lucky enough to
have money on you to pay. Just
sign the refunds book, give them
your money and get it back the
next time the Catering Office is
open.

The biggest difference between
the Hostels and Home is Hostels
don't have Mothers. M[...]to do all their
own laundry and housekeeping for
the first time in their life. This
domestic dilemma disturbs them so
much that they ignore it until the
bed has sheets like crusts and their
clothes are jumping in the corner of
the room. It is difficult when there is
only two wringer washing machines
for 96 people and neither work,
plus the one vacuum cleaner is
never in the Common room
(second years who have just
started flatting have probably
flogged it) however organisation is
the key. Put aside a bit of time each
week for the suburban side of life
and if it is easier put all your dirty
clothes in a sack and drop them off
at the Laundromat.

The truth is that you are left to your
own devices here. So long as you
don't burn the place down, grow
grass on the Balcony, or practice
knife throwing in the Common
room disturbing someone elses
happiness, no one will know you
are lying in a drunken coma and
haven't been to l[...]. They may differ from yours
so ABBA at 6.00am as you practice
your yoga may not be appreciated.

On the other hand you learn to
accommodate to other peoples
bizzare practices. | remember many
a night trying to get to sleep and
the girl directly opposite would be
having yet another late night prayer
evening, the guys above would be
practising their indoor cricket down
the hall, and someone outside was
experiencing problems as_ their
stomach refused to digest the
homebrew just consumed.

Your year in Hostels could prove
one of the most rewarding during
your degree. Just keep in mind
that the successful Hostelite is the
one who is tolerant, friendly,

trusting and keeps a_ toasted
sandwich maker in their room!

So before you rush off to buy a
sandwich maker ... All the best for
1988 and may their be many happy[...]

Disgruntled about how your
course is taught? The way the as-
signments were marked? The
amount of work you are expected
to do for a 5% test?

If you feel you’re been treated un-

Teaching Method
Perhaps you have acomplaint about
how the course is taught. Eample of

writing illegibly, writing too fast on the
blackboard and erasing it before the
class has a chance to take the notes
down, using unreadable overhead

Assessment
Another area of complaint may be
the assessment of the course, i.e.
tests, essays, finals. Some common

- unreasonable match of questions
to the course content, i.e. exam
questions a section of the course
which was not taught to the detail re-
quired.

- inconsistent grading of wor[...]o a
question in a test get very different
marks.

The Procedures

It is a good idea to ask other class-
mates their opinion on the course
problem you have identified before
making compliants. Others may be
able to give you more examples of

the particular problem to strengthen
your case.

With both teaching and assessment
complaints the first person to ap-
proach is the lecturer or course con-
troller. Asking a lecturer to speak up
or not to clean the section of the
board you are copying down may be
all that is required.

If this fails to get any remedy to the
situation there are other avenues to
get help from. The first is the Head of
Department the course is taught in.
The others are the Departmental
contact on the Faculty Co-ordinating

Committee and the Dean of the
Faculty. The departments secretary
should be able to tell you who these
people are.

As a student in a course you are the
consumer of the University’s prod-
ucts. If you feel the courses are not
up to the standard you'd expect
make your views known to the
people concerned. If you need any
help on solving course problems
then contact the President of the
Students’ Association or any other
Executive me[...]ments to be faced as a
Tertiary Student.

cannibis) is the drug you are most
likely to come onto contact with.

bridge, stealing the folks caravan,
camping in McDonalds, most
people consider flatting as the
most viable option.

Flatting is a unique opportunity
where you are introduced to
playing house. Consider it as an
apprenticeship to domesticity
where you discover just how many
(or how few) suburban gene[...]f
cornflakes, balancing loud drunken
parties with the dusting, waiting
with 6 others for the toilet and
mowing the lawns to please the
neighbours is all part of the
package.

THE ORGANISED FLAT
Occupants do the dishes, keep a
little garden, cook nutritious meal
and support an S.P.C.A. cat.

THE UNORGANISED FLAT
Basically the only thing that holds
up the roof in this type of dwelling
is the mould and the T.V. The only
form of nourishment is in a brown
bottle and[...]no flat cat
because a) it wouldn't survive and
b) the S.P.C.A with foresight
wouldn't give them one any[...]swats, non-smokers and
T.V. addicts.

Debate over the success of flatting
with friends runs high. Often[...]ing with strangers can be more
satisfying despite the unknown risk

The level of rent you pay can vary
immensely and is of course divided
up by the amount of people inside.

economics aside be realistic do
you really want to share your room

private boarding. Full board
means you generally get a
furnished bedroom, toilet and two

unlike flatting you don't have to
cook for a hoard of hungry
hooligans, cope with massive
heating bills incurred during the
snow storm or grovel to a grumpy
landlord. It isn't your problem if the
roof blows off or the washing
machine breaks down. However
halleluyah to no responsibility also
means little freedom. If the hosts
live off a diet of greasy lamb chops

They may also not welcome the
idea of supporting you and your
bank or approve of your
hangovers.

However private board can be
great for the academic life, so much
peace and quiet what else is there
to do? Also the bank account
could improve in health as there
isn't retainer and the unseen bills
that come with flatting. Weigh up
the odds and if you feel the need
for a surrogate Mum and a Father
figure advertise, give them the
third degree and take it from there.

Students Association operates as
Accomodation Bureau and
also owns and builds it's own

noticeboard, keep your ear to the
ground, check the newspapers
and listen to the Radio Massey
Accomodation report as possible
means of finding accomodation.

to move into a flat, it is ESSEN-
TIAL that you know what your
rights and responsibilities as a

a) Bond Money

A landlord cannot ask you for more
than 4 weeks rent as bond money.
The landlord then has 15 working
days to pay your bond money overto
the Housing Corporation’s Tenancy
Bond Division.

If you don’t get a receipt from the
Tenancy Bond within a month, pay-
ing your bond has been paid over by
your landlord, ring Tenancy Bond or
the Tenants Union so that it can be
followed up.

Yourlandlord MUST by law, give you
a receipt for your bond money, stat-
ing the amount, the date it was paid
and what the money was for. (KEEP
ALL RECIEPTS!)

b)Rent in advance:

The landlord cannot charge you
more than two weeks rent in ad-
vance. She/he MUST give you a
receipt for this - KEEP IT!

c) Tenancy agreements

You do not have to have a tenancy
agreement. Both tenants and land-
lords are protected by the Residen-
tial Tenancies Act.

However, if you or your landlord do
want to have a tenancy agreement
you can get them free of charge from
the Tenants Union. If your landlord
has one drawn up by her/his
lawyer,you are required to pay the

legal costs for that. These costs can
be up to $100.

d) Conditions of the flat:

When you move into a flat it is ES-
SENTIAL that you make some rec-
ord of the condition of the flat.

The best way of doing this is to get
the landlord to go around the prop-
erty with you. Make a full list of any
faults or damage and include any
fittings provided by the
landlord.(fridge, stove, lampshades,
curtains etc). Also include any re-
pairs that you orthe landlord agree to
do and set a date by which they
MUST be done. Both you and the
landlord MUST sign the list.

This list is very important. If any
damage is done to the flat it is up to
you to prove it was not done by you
or your guests. You don’t want to
end up paying for damage done by
the previous tenants.

(A list for this purpose is included
with the free tenancy agreements
provided by the Tenants Union.)

a) Your landlord must provide you
with receipts for all rent you pay
unless it is paid by direct credit, a
non-negotiable personal cheque or

When you move into a flat, under the
law, you accept the conditions of that
flat. So if the holes in the floor were

This, of course, does not apply to
problems you had no way of knowing
about until you moved in - like the
leaking roof you didn’t notice until it

it, providing you didn’t cause the
problem in the first place. She/he
must maintain the flat in a “reason-
able state of repair”.

If your landlord refuses to do the

i)for inspection - after giving you 48
hours notice and only once every 4
weeks.

wants you to leave the flat unless
you:

i) Are 21 days behind in rent.

iil) Have threatened to do or done

Pour the heated peanut sauce
over the wok creation and toss
gently so everything is coated

Somehow the absurd idea
has evolved that feminism

attitudes, such as non-sexist child
rearing , the black family and
feminism, womens place in the
workforce and male violence in the
home. In those days women were

scoring a rich husband was the
ultimate aim. Maternity leave was a
privilege and paternity leave was
not even part of the language.

This is what Feminist politics is all
about - uncovering the unfairness
of it all. Unfortunately though
